Reflection
A) New and interesting content learned through the project: I have learned many things from this project. The first thing that I learned from this project was the number of seals that have been used in the history of the state. Before doing this project I thought that the current seal had been the one used since the beginning of the state. I also learned what other types of documents the seal could be found. It was interesting to see the difference in the types of documents it was used on then and what it is found on now. The next thing that I learned from this project was how the dates that are found on the seal relate to the states history. I also learned the meaning of the states motto which is "to be rather than to seem" by doing this project. I found this project to be very interesting and insightful.
B) Explicitly connects how the content connects with National and State Standards:
This is the standard that my project is related to:
4.H.2 Understand how notable structures, symbols and place names are significant to North Carolina.
4.H.2.2 Explain the historical significance of North Carolina’s state
symbols.
C) Communicates how what you learned from creating the project that will be of value to you as an elementary social studies teacher:
The information that I learned from creating this project will be valuable to me as a teacher because I can use this website as an introduction to a unit of study on the state symbols. I could also use my website as an example of a product that my students could create themselves on a state symbol of their choice. I can also use this project to show how social studies is relevant to students to day and that its not just learning about the past.
